First, list six Takarazuka plays you love, or ask someone to assign you six.

1. El Halcon
3. A/L
4. The Second Life
5. Silver Rose Chronicle
6. Scout

(I personally decided to go with original Zuka works, and therefore omitted tsukigumi Ernest in Love, Me and My Girl, and Elisabeth)

Please work, cut? )

Watched the 2006 TCA special last night.  It was okay and kept me entertained while I got some hand sewing work done, but generally wasn't my thing.

That being said, there were a few sections I liked, particularly when nearly everyone was on stage to sing "Joyful."  It was so cool to see, for example, Morie on stage at the same time as Touko.  And Kiriyan got to sing How to Succeed.

I have to say, though, somehow Nova Bossa Nova songs don't get old, or at least I still enjoy them.  Tom may have sung Nova Bossa Nova songs in every TCA special since she performed the show back in 1999, but she can certainly still sing "Sinner Man" very nicely.  (I also have a weakness for the version of Amour, Amour sung by Tom AND Mami in the 2007 special)

It's probably time for me to go to bed.

I started rewatching bits of "Scout" tonight.  It's *such* a good show.  But...

I talk about the ending of Scout in very general terms, but I'm putting this under a spoiler cut just in case )

I've decided that I'm torn on Masatsuka-sensei's shows in general.  On one hand, he's written a lot of really good, smart shows (Magician no Yuutsu, Scout, Bourbon Street Blues, Practical Joke, Futari Dake ga Waru, etc).

However, as someone whose Japanese is passable at best, his shows tend to be VERY dialogue heavy (I prefer shows that have more songs).  And depending on the show, the vocabulary can be difficult to understand.  For example, I don't think I ever would have been able to follow Futari Dake if it weren't for [ profile] ekusudei 's translation.  I'm a bit worried about Bara ni Furu Ame in this regard, *especially* since it's supposed to have a lot to do with business.

But even if there are business terms that I wouldn't even understand in English flying everywhere, I suppose chances are that it will at least be intelligent, and I'm always a fan of that.  Besides, I won't be seeing this one in the theaters, so even if it is extremely dialogue heavy it's not like I'm going to have to sit through it 5+ times.

I can't believe Zorro has already finished its Daigekijou run, Bara ni Furu Ame is about to start, and Touko and Asuka are about to retire.  I don't think I'm used to this new one-month schedule yet!

Now I remember why I haven't been translating so much lately...because it takes forever.  Comments are highly appreciated XD

I think I've hit a new low.

Last night as I was browsing for information about Asuka's photo book, I actually couldn't remember if I had read a particular bit of information in regards to this book or if it had just dreamed it.

This certain piece of information was that Asuka and Tonami were going to have a collaborative sayonara photo book, and it was going to kind of be like a second part of Mon Bijoux, except for Mihoko couldn't be in it because she already retired.

As it turns out, I dreamed this and Asuka's sayonara photo book will only be about Asuka. But I was very confused for a moment!

Even without the dreamed-up Tonami content, I want to buy this book. Except for I also want to buy Touko's sayonara book too. >.> Obviously I need to sell a kidney.

(And er, obviously the above is a joke. I think -_-;)

I'm hoping that Tonami and Ume-chan also get sayonara photo books <3

It made my speculation-happy heart very joyful last night to see some new show announcements <3333  The rest of the 2009 schedule (as in which troupe is playing where, *not* which shows and their leads) has been up here for a while now.

The things we still don't know about are:
Rambling underneath the cut )
Of course Hankyu will probably throw in a bunch of transfers just to throw me off XD
matataku_hoshi: (Touko "butterfly")
Well, this is news to me at least.  I hadn't heard about it before :P

Touko is getting a single collection CD!   Which is fitting given that she's retiring, but hey, it makes me feel better to finally see it.

The thing is out of the tracks they've listed, I already have about half of them via either single CDs or iTunes Japan.  And as much as I want to support Touko, if I already have half of the songs then it might be better if I put my money towards, say, the "Butterfly" single or her sayonara show.

Then again, it says that there will also be tracks from her live performances, so maybe it'll be worth it.

In other news, I spent a good chunk of last night refreshing the Hankyu homepage, only for there NOT to be any announcements.  (At least I got some letter-writing done -_-;)  Today as of 12 PM Japan time there actually are a few announcements about things like Tomo no Kai tickets.  Given that most of Japan shuts down around New Year's I had written off any kind of major announcements today or tomorrow, but now I think I may be stuck obsessing at least a little anyway.

Well, it's not like I'm going to fall asleep any time soon :P

Hankyu just made an announcement about the release of the 2009 calendars, which will be on October 10th.  Along with the usual suspects, Kimu will have her own personal calendar this year.  She also makes it onto the star calendar along with the top stars and nibante.  This fact, along with a lot of other little things, only confirms my hunch that Hankyu is treating Kimu like a second nibante in yukigumi.

Kimu is on the short list of my list of favorite otokoyaku, but at the same time I hate the idea of Yumiko being passed up.  I'd like to see Yumiko get at least one show as top post-Mizu.

700 yen per personal calendar isn't bad.  Obviously I need the Kiriyan calendar, but finances depending I may need the Kimu and Touko ones too... *plots in an evil manner*

P.S. Based on the timing of the 2008 schedule release this time last year, I'm expecting an announcement about the 2009 schedule any day now.  As I've whined about before, yours truly doesn't have internet at home, meaning I can't stalk the internet every second of the day.  (I can get to Gmail and even Live Journal on my cell phone, but my phone's inability to display Japanese makes looking at the official page useless).  In any case, I expect one of you lot to e-mail me if any announcements are made :P
matataku_hoshi: (Touko "Summer Makes Sense")
So I've been kind of half watching "A Song For Kingdoms" while moving stuff from my HDD to DVD-RAM.  I need to sit down and watch the whole show sometime, because from what I've seen, it looks really good.  I've been a sucker for the story of Aida after I fell in love with the Broadway version in high school (I know, I know, it's a guilty pleasure.  But isn't Takarazuka too in some ways?)

From the limited bits I've seen Touko still has an otokoyaku edge to her, but she makes a surprisingly good onnayaku.  (Well, maybe not surprisingly since she's a very talented lady, but you get the idea).  I couldn't help but giggle at how short she looked next to Wataru, though :D
I don't want Touko to retire anytime soon, but when that unfortunate event happens, I look forward to seeing what she does next.

And for the record, these have to be the tackiest finale costumes ever.  I love Takarazuka :D
matataku_hoshi: (Kiriyan "up to no good")
Pick your five favorite Takarasiennes (past or present), and cast them in your dream roles.  It doesn’t matter how completely unfeasible these roles are, let your imagination run wild!  I’ve stuck to Takarazuka and musicals in my answers, but feel free to go outside of that.  (After all, Kiriyan once said that she’d love to play Jack Skellington ^^)

I like.

I thought this came out very lovely.  I think I may need it, despite the fact that I currently have five Takarazuka posters hanging in my apartment and a few more than aren't on my wall yet.  (Does this make me insane?)

Looks like they've decided to stay away from blond!Touko.  Hmm, it's a little strange for Percy not to be a blond, but Touko looks quite lovely as it is so I'm not complaining.

I do hope they remember that the show is a comedy, though -_-;
matataku_hoshi: (Aran Kei)
Because it was senshuraku, everyone got a penlight when they entered the theater, along with instructions to wave it during a certain part during the finale.  It was red and said “Le Rouge et le Noir.”  I love these sorts of things *g*  I was a bit surprised since I thought it only happened at a top star’s sayonara show, but I’m certainly not complaining.  Apparently the Tokyo branch of Touko’s club organized it ^^

Warning: Spoilers contained within!

Spring break=sitting in the staff room with no work and no classes for eight hours a day=sketchy translations.  ([profile] wao_wao, I hope it's okay that for the title of the article I used what you had come up with in the Mizu version.  Let me know if it's not)

The universe granted my wish and showed the Scarlet Pimpernel press conference on the news the morning.  Hopefully it’ll be up on the website soon.  Two comments:
  • Originally I complained that Touko’s costume, while pretty, was too dark for the tone of the show.  When you see her wearing it live you can see that it’s actually kind of glittery.  I now think that it fits the character of Percy very well.  Oh, and obviously Touko looks hot :D
  • They sang two songs.  One was “The Riddle.”  The other…I actually didn’t recognize.  It was a solo for Touko.  I guess Frank Wildhorn wrote a new song.  I wouldn’t be surprised if there will be more, as he's never been shy about tweaking this show before.  I don’t mind the addition of new songs, just so long as they don’t cut any of the existing songs!  I worry that “I’ll Forget You” will be cut, simply because Takarazuka is cruel in its treatment of musumeyaku.  It’s a little strange that they’re giving Percy a new song, as he already gets “Prayer” and “She Was There” as solos, plus he gets “The Creation of Man” and “Into the Fire.”  Maybe Frank Wildhorn wanted to write something specifically for Touko’s voice?

(If I haven’t mentioned it before, I am greatly, greatly amused that Frank Wildhorn, who has had troubled being accepted by Broadway critics for years, may finally have found his calling in

In other Frank Wildhorn related news, I was reading an older Kiriyan article where she was asked which role she’d like to play.  She mentioned Jekyll/Hyde from Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll and Hyde.  (Kiriyan wears a Jekyll and Hyde t-shirt in the Nova Bossa Nova shinko program).  I really hope I’m not jinxing myself by saying this *knocks on lots of wood*, but I can’t really see anyone except for Kiriyan becoming top star of tsuki after Asako.  They have to give her a western musical during her time as top, as Kiriyan loves western musicals.  I actually haven’t seen or listened to Jekyll and Hyde.  Is it too dark for Takarazuka? *scratches head*

I suppose I should warn my friends list that I will be blogging about hoshigumi's upcoming Scarlet Pimpernel obsessedly in the coming months. In high school I really fell in love with the Broadway musical. It inspired me to read the books, which I also fell in love with. As soon as I got into Takarazuka, I (like many others) said that this would make a perfect Takarazuka show. And really...aagh, Touko is going to be so awesome. As will Chie and Asuka and all of the rest of the hoshigumisei <3 <3 <3  In any case, I think several people have linked to this already, but I feel the need to comment on it anyway.  Am doing this in bullet points because I am lazy:
  • I'm trying to adjust to the sight of Blond Hair!Touko, but I think it'll definitely grow on me.   (Besides, it would be a little strange if Percy didn't have blond hair, now that I think about it).  *scratches head* Except she wasn't blond on the first publicity picture that went up on the site earlier...oh well, I guess that wasn't a final design anyway.
  • According to the article, Touko sang 「ひとかけらの勇気」 (I think this is "Into the Fire") and Touko, Chie, and Asuka sang 「謎解きのゲーム」 (The Riddle).  I am praying that this is on the news tomorrow, or at the very least that it shows up on the website soon.
  • The casting of Chie as Chauvelin doesn't surprise me, and I think she'll be wonderful.  The only thing is I always got the impression from the books and the Broadway musical that Chauvelin wasn't supposed to be younger than Percy... Oh well ^^;; I'm really curious about where Tatsuki You and Suzumi Shio will be cast.  I'm guessing they'll end up as either Armand (Marguerite's younger brother), Andrew (Percy's best friend), or Tussaud (a guy who Percy ends up saving).
  • For those of you who aren't familiar with Pimpernel, there's an absolutely wonderful number in the middle in which Percy teaches the other members of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel how to be fops.  They wear some pretty outrageous costumes in the process.  I always wondered how Takarazuka would deal with this, given that even "normal" costumes in Takarazuka tend to be pretty outrageous.  My idea way back when was that originally everyone would be costumed very starkly, so then when Percy begins to dress like a fop there would be a contrast.  Judging from the pictures on ENAK this may be the route they're taking (because really, Broadway!Percy would never wear black ;) ).  Have I mentioned how happy I am that Koike "I Made Luna, Bara no Fuuin, and Many Other Beautiful Pieces of Crack" Shuuichiro will be directing?
Tragically The Scarlet Pimpernel doesn't come to Tokyo until after I've left.  Therefore, I'll be making a trip down to Takarazuka in July.  In between this and Kiriyan's MiiMai in Kyushu, I don't exactly have a lot of extra money these days >_<

Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention here

It's a little too serious for the tone of the show, but even so....DEAD.
matataku_hoshi: (Aran Kei)
So last night I decided to drown my woes about Takarazuka by…watching more Takarazuka at the Tokyo Theater.  (Okay, actually I had bought the ticket over a month before.  It just happened to work out well ^^)

On a random hoshigumi related note, I have a hunch that a star-track otokoyaku is going to be transferred into tsukigumi within the next year.  If this is the case, I wonder if one of these could be Tatsuki You or Suzumi Shio, given that they weren’t promoted after Wataru left?  Or are those two off the top star track at this point?
