matataku_hoshi: (Kiriyan and Marimo Pimpernel)

It's always a little weird watching revues in their touring/Chunichi/etc. versions.  I like how lower ranked people get bigger parts, but it's hard for the troupe not to feel like it's at half power simply because of it being cut in half number-wise.

I know some of the numbers were switched around, but I only saw the original Heat On Beat once and I'm having trouble remembering what here is new and what's not ^^;  I wrote some thoughts on the original Heat on Beat here.

Kiriya Hiromu: It was...a little surreal finally getting to see her as top star.  Obviously this is Kiriyan and she can't go wrong.  Yet in terms of this particular show, I couldn't shake the feeling that "Heat On Beat" (even in its Chunichi version) was an Asako revue.  Kiriyan was able to fit into that fairly well, but I'm still waiting for some works that are specifically written for Kiriyan.  (Which is why I'm very excited about The Gypsy Baron/Rhapsodic Moon)

There were three scenes that took my breath away in terms of Kiriyan-ness: 1) the chair dance, 2) the number in white (I'm sure it has a better name :P), and especially 3) the scene where Kiriyan dances barefoot.  She's *such* an incredible dancer *_______________*

So in short, I'm still very excited about Kiriyan finaly making top.  I just want a bigger staircase and a show that's written for her :P

Marimo (Aono Yuki): Because "Heat On Beat" was originally written for Asako during her partner-less era, in this version Marimo's parts felt like they were being squeezed in.  (Yes, obviously even the original "Heat On Beat" had scenes written for Ai-chan and Shizuku, but they weren't top-star parts)

The result was that I didn't get much of a sense of Marimo as 1) Kiriyan's new partner, and 2) the new top musumeyaku of tsukigumi.  There were parts where she felt too cutesy for my taste, and other times where she felt more adult (most noticably the chair scene and the pair dance).  *sigh* I want to like her, but for the moment I'm still undecided either way.

Mirio (Asumi Rio): She was definitely the nibante part in "Heat On Beat."  I acknowledge that Mirio is technically very good.  However, because of all of the politics surrounding her promotion I don't think I'll ever really be a "fan", per se.  I thought she did nicely in her numbers here, however.  If she's going to be an uppity wakate, I much prefer her being one that has some talent.

Sonoka (Kiryuu Sonoka), Magee (Seijou Kaito), and Morie (Aoki Izumi): Not sure what I can say that hasn't been said before.  I still love these guys to death, I just wish it was easier to pick them out on the DVD :(  Magee got a part (I think with Sonoka) that was sung in English, which was fun.  Morie still has her endearing baby cheeks, and yet she's only grown sexier over the years.  Here's hoping that these ladies stick around tsukigumi for a long time to come.

Ayahoshi Rion: She had a REALLY pretty solo, and suddenly shot up my list of musumeyaku I want to be promoted.

So in short there were some scenes that felt "off", and some scenes that I really liked.  I'm blaming any "off"-ness on the fact that this wasn't a Daigekijou review.

To be completely honest, for all that I am excited that Kiriyan has become top, she hasn't become top of the troupe that I fell in love with three years ago.  There are still people I love in tsukigumi, but the truth is I still feel the loss of many people I love (Eri-san, Sueko, Taki-san, Mihoko, Yuuhi, Ai-chan, etc).

At the same time I've waited a while for Kiriyan to be top, and I *want* to like her tsukigumi.  I don't want to be so caught up in retirements and politics that I can't enjoy things any more.

Anyway, I still have Yukariko to watch, and I plan on buying Scarlet Pimpernel when it comes out <3
