Tsukigumi casting information

Are more people going to be added later?  If I counted right, at the moment only 64 out of tsukigumi's 86 members are present (they'll be down from 89 after retirements *sniff*)  Arex in particular looks much tinier than one would expect from a Theater Drama City show.

I'm very squeeful about all of the senka people.  Can't Misa Noeru just join the troupe?
(With some way of having both her and Taki-san around, of course)  This is the fourth tsukigumi show in a row that Misa Noeru has been in (PariSora, Osaka Samurai, Mahoroba, and now Tales from Hoffman).  Maybe she's getting tired of moving troupes and is unofficially part of tsuki?  Speaking of Taki-san, [personal profile] princesslucia, your dream is one step closer to being true.

Edit: Looks like Misa Noeru was with hoshigumi a lot in 2006.  Maybe she likes sticking with one troupe for a year or so and getting to know them a little.

Also, right now the cast lists for Tales from Hoffman are exactly the same.  Color me confused.  Role switch, maybe?

Soragumi Phantom review

So, continuing down the stack of unwatched DVDs, I finally finished sora's Phantom last night.  Like BeruBara 2001 I wasn't really getting into it when I started watching, but by the time I finished last night I decided it was a really well done show.

I think there has been speculation that if Phantom is done again, tsuki will get it.  I'm not sure where this logic comes from, but I feel the need to comment anyway.  I don't see Asako getting another western musical after "Me and My Girl" after she retires, but I may be wrong.  Regardless, I think she'd be a great Phantom.  I think you all know by now how I feel about Kiriyan being cast in just about any interesting lead role.  Vocally, I'm not sure if Ai-chan or Nene (who seem to be the candidates for the next tsuki top musumeyaku) are quite strong enough.  Personally I'm rooting for Mihoko to stay around after Asa leaves.  I think she could definitely pull off Christine.  If this show was done with Kiriyan in the lead, I could see Yuuhi as a really good Carierre.  And of course, if tsuki did Phantom in the next few years Taki-san would play Carlotta yet again.  Is there any kind of precedent for a sienne playing the same role three times?

tsukigumi mumblings

So I keep on meaning to post more about the schedule stuff, only I'm finding that most people have already said a lot of what I wanted to say.  But I'll give it a shot anyway.

There's some concern about Asako being typecast, and it's probably pretty valid.  That being said, I'm still happy about Me and My Girl.  Tsukigumi has unfortunately gotten stuck with a lot of substandard material in the last couple of years.  Asako has not gotten the treatment she deserves.  I would rather see her get a guaranteed good comedy role over a more serious role that might turn out to be a clunker.  Besides, since Me and My Girl is something she's been wanting to do, she'll really throw herself into it.

Does it make me selfish that I mostly just want Kiriyan to end up with a really interesting role with a lot of stage time? -_-;;;;;;  I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never actually seen the '95 Me and My Girl, so I'm not so familiar with the roles.  The idea of Kiriyan in drag definitely intrigues me, but I can also see the argument for having Yuuhi be the one to throw herself at Asako.  Out of curiosity, could someone tell me the benefits of playing either Gerald or Sir John roles?

In other news, the announcement of The Tales of Hoffman is probably good news for all younger siennes.  Since Morie and Mirio are off doing Tales of Hoffman, hopefully others like Maggie and Masaki have a better chance of getting good roles in either Hollywood Lover or Arex.  Ideally everyone will end up with something juicy.

Regardless, it looks like an exciting schedule next year.  Right now I'm signed on to work in Japan until August 2008, meaning I can see everything in the Tokyo area that has been announced.  Depending on whether or not I extend my contract, the next schedule announcement might be more angsty for spoiled ole yours truly -_-;

relieving news (take two)

I accidentally hit a wrong button and deleted all of what I had written.  So this is the somewhat shorter version: Kiriyan has been announced as being in Arex, tsukigumi's upcoming Theater Drama City show.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that means with rehearsal schedules and everything that she's going to be staying in tsuki for the time being.  The same goes for Yuuhi, who will be having a Bow Hall at the same time.  Yes, I know you all told me that Hankyu probably wouldn't move her, but Hankyu isn't always logical and I was worried.  It's not that I didn't want Kiriyan to be top star, it's that I was really worried that if they made her the next top star of hana that she was going to go the way of Kashige.  And in my very biased opinion, she deserves a lot more than that.

Hopefully what will happen is that Asa will (sadly) retire sometime in the next few years and Kiriyan will take over.  I suppose there's still a chance of Yuuhi taking over for a while.  Unfortunately now it's back to worrying about if Kiriyan will ever be promoted to top star due to illness.  I try to tell myself that it's not worth worrying about since I'm not a doctor, I don't have her medical records, and therefore have no idea what's going on there.  Besides, she hasn't missed a show since Bridge of Smiles, Bridge of Tears all the way back in 2003.  I guess having Finch is a good luck charm.  (I read that she bought him during the period that she was sick to cheer herself up).

In any case, with Kiriyan and Yuuhi out of the way, that leaves Yumiko and Un-chan as the candidates for Osa's replacement.  Given that Yumiko just got transferred to yukigumi, Un-chan seems the more logical choice.  I suppose that if she gets promoted then Sou Kazuho and Aine Harei will be bumped up?  (Assuming they don't bring anyone new in to do the nibante and sanbante roles).

*lets deep breath out* Whew.

Tsukigumi 2008

*facepalm* I go away for the internet for a few hours and all sorts of stuff happens.  [personal profile] caithion made a post here about what tsukigumi's going to be doing at the beginning of 2008.

Alexander the Great, huh?  I think I agree with [personal profile] caithion that it's kind of gutsy for Hankyu to try the concept again after Akatsuki no Roma apparently got a mixed reception.  (And even if Akatsuki no Roma had been well received, I'm a bit confused as to why they want to do two very similar ideas with the same actress in the space of two years).  I'll admit that the concept itself doesn't do that much for me, but it's tsukigumi so I'll be there.  I do hope it's a good show, though.  Cause the tsukigumi ladies in their current configuration are talented and unfortunately haven't been able to show it off as much as I'd like.  *shakes fist at Hankyu*

My first reaction to hearing that Yuuhi is getting a Bow Hall is "What, why not Kiriyan?", but even I will admit that is silly given that Kiriyan just got a Bow Hall in 2007.  *grumble* Why is it that I'm always protective of Kiriyan and worried about Yuuhi somehow usurping her?  It's not fair to Yuuhi.  And she hasn't had a Bow Hall since 2005, and I'm looking forward to seeing this one.  I'm just illogically and unnecessarily protective of Kiriyan, I guess.

I really hope this isn't some kind of strange sign that Kiriyan will be moved to Hana.  I mean, there's plenty of other reasons why she wouldn't get the 2008 Bow Hall, right?  Like that she just had a Bow Hall?

*wanders off being paranoid and protective of Kiriyan*

Whaa...what?!?!

Both Takigawa Sueko AND Yoshizuki Eri are retiring?!?!  Two of my favorite (if not my favorite period) support siennes?!?!?  These guys don't get major major roles, but I've always thought that they're part of the glue that holds tsukigumi together.  Hopefully they're both moving onto things in their life that make them happy, but this still greatly sadden selfish ole audience member me.  Especially since unlike retiring top stars, we won't necessarily know what ends up happening to them.

Not to be too down, but if Eri and Sueko both retire AND Hankyu moves Kiriyan AND Asa and Mihoko retire soon, I feel like a major hole is going to be torn into my tsukigumi loving heart.  There are many different people who I love in my troupe, but I'm going to get very grumpy if I have to deal with losing too many of them at once.  Maybe it's just that I'm relatively new to this fandom (about six months now and look at me -_-), so I guess this is the first time someone I really love has announced they're retiring.  Unfortunately due to the nature of Zuka I guess people are constantly being transferred and retiring.

If I camp out overnight at the Tokyo Takarazua theater is there any chance I can get tachimi for the last show of Mahoroba?  I think I may definitely need to write fan letters to both of them, although I'd probably just end up mailing them to the theater.  I wonder who they're going to move up to vice-kumichou...

Speaking of Mahoroba, the final poster is out and it's different than the one I have a chirashi of.  It's too bad that the chirashi I have is sort of bent, because it might actually be rare.  However, it has Mihoko, Kiriyan, and Yuuhi, all of whom look great.  I think I'm going to require the poster when it goes on sale.

*edit* I just took a look at the tsukigumi takawiki page.  The next most senior member after Yoshizuki Eri is Kitajima Mami, so I'm guessing she'll be the next vice-kumichou.  Interestingly enough after her comes Yuuhi and Asako.  Although even if those two are still sticking around for a while I'm not sure if they'd want to want to make people who are already extremely busy have extra responsbility.  *grumble* All of this trying to think about who is going to retire when makes me grumpy...

Heh heh heh...

This is now mine, courtesy of Y!J.  It's nibante Rika and baby Kiriyan and Tani and just barely not-baby Yuuhi and Mami and...you get the idea ^_^  Okay, so it's a little sad that I'm in Japan and I'm still using Celga, but I don't trust my Japanese skills enough yet to deal with the fine print.  I'm also hoping that I can win this, and I'm strongly considering placing a bid on an out of print series II Personal Book.  I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend over 3000 yen, but I'm not sure if I can get any of the out of print books for less than that.  I'll admit that I've been extremely spoiled in that I found Asa's, Kiriyan's, and Tani's series I Personal Books at Taka-an for less than the cover price (they were used).

In other news, Wataru and and Iori Naoka are currently having a showdown on my TV in Jazzmania.  I'm highly intrigued/amused.  Kiriyan also had an extremely, extremely short act of her own as a scene-changer.  It made me happy.  Why is it though that Gaichi is in the revue half of this show but not the musical half?  Senka was kind of interesting in that you could see random people pop up in your troupes' shows, but I would guess that it would be highly annoying if you were trying to follow the career of a certain actress.  I'm glad they got rid of it.

Oh my God...Rika just opened up her shirt...and now she's taking off her jacket...  Aaaaggghh!  It's otokoyaku Rui!  I think I'm going to hit the "post" button before I die of squee.

So. About "Mind Traveller"

Does anyone know anything about this show, or if it's any good?  I get paid on Thursday and I'm trying to decide what I want to buy.  I'm interested in seeing Un-chan in a lead role, plus I'm trying to branch out into non-tsuki shows.  Tsuki is obviously my favorite troupe, but I feel like it wouldn't hurt to see what else is out there in Zukaland.  Right now my list of shows that I own is rather uh...tsuki dominated.  Not that I'm giving up on them, of course.  I already have the Yamato Yuuga boxset with Twelth Night and Cinderella Rock reserved for late July :D

I think I'm also going to get the Kiriyan BeruBara digest.  It has the advantage (in terms of branching out) of not actually being tsuki while still containing Kiriyan ^_^.  Can you watch a BeruBara digest without having seen the entire show before?  I have seen a little bit of the BeruBara anime and I'm familiar with the premise of the story.  I am interested in seeing all of BeruBara, but alas Grand Theater shows are expensive.  And the 2001 hoshi version (which I've heard is the best all-around) I vaguely remember being especially expensive due to some extra material or something.

Of course, it's rather sad that I still haven't watched my copy of soragumi's Phantom yet.  I don't know what it is, but I really like to be in the right mood when I watch a show.  It took me about a month of having the DVD to watch yukigumi's Nova Bossa Nova, which I finally sat dawn and watched last night.  That one was fun.  TIP is awesome :D

On the popularity of tsukigumi and soragumi among English-speaking fans

I was talking to someone a while back and they mentioned that they thought that soragumi and tsukigumi were by far the most popular among English speaking fans.  Personally I would add Haruno Sumire to that list, but other than that, I would agree with that statement.

Now, I'm fairly biased because tsukigumi is my favorite troupe and soragumi my second favorite.  But for everyone else, exactly why is this?  Is this because of the people who currently in sora/tsukigumi are well liked by westerners for whatever reason?  Is it the style of these two troupes?  Or is it just coincidence as to how things happen on the internet?

I got into tsukigumi because their Elisabeth was one of the first DVDs I bought (the other being Takashiro Kei's sayonara concert).  I almost bought hanaigumi's, but in the end went with tsuki's.  This was influenced by a friend who had been shown the tsuki version by [profile] bunretsu.  I got Ernest in Love next and it was all downhill from there.  I often wonder how my fandom career would have changed if I had bought the other Elisabeth -_-; As to soragumi, "Sakamoto Ryoma/I Love Chopin" was my first show.  However, I think it was A/L that hooked me.  Plus tsuki and sora have the whole exchange program thing going on so it's pretty easy to be a fan of both.

I find this all interesting because I've heard some reports that tsukigumi isn't all that popular in Japan right now (I hope this is just rumor and I stick my tongue out at the idea).  Hope I'm not offending anyone here because all of Takarazuka is shiny.  I may be completely wrong here, but it's a trend I've noticed and I'm curious as to what other people think.

(Of course, if anyone wants to chime in with a "I'm a fan of hoshi/yuki/hanagumi, what the heck are you talking about?!", feel free).

Les Bijoux Brilliants thoughts

So out of my shiny new things, I decided to start with Les Bijoux Brilliants, as I was in the mood for a revue last night.

So overall, Les Bijoux Brilliants was shiny, even with the cut scenes.  It had my troupe being their wonderful selves and it was fun.

Am I too constantly positive in my reviews?  I think what ends up happening is that I 1) end up only writing up stuff that I really like and 2) I'm subconsciously scared of pissing off anyone's fans -_-;

Press release on new products

I really need some Tani icons.  Not to mention some icons that aren't Tsukigumi (as wonderful as they are).

According to this press release, there's going to be a lot of Tani related releases in the next couple of months.  To start off with, the piano version of "Valencia no Atsui Hana" will be out on the 22nd.

More exciting, however, is the DVD release of some old Bow Hall shows, specifically "Twelth Night" and "Cinderella Rock", both of which had Tani in the lead.  Wow, she really did rise quickly, didn't she?  She must have been only a 4-ken or 5-ken when she did these.  I'm excited not only because I'm fond of Tani, but because these shows feature a lot of my other favorite Moonlets as babies as well.

It appears that both will be released in a limited edition set called "Special DVD-Collection Yamato."

I was interested in acquiring Cinderella Rock anyway, so it makes me excited that there's an actual DVD I can buy.  For some reason I'm really picky about having my shows on DVD and I usually won't buy the VHS unless I think that's the only way I'm going to be able to acquire it.

In other DVD news, Sakura/Secret Hunter will be be coming out on June 20th.

Slapstick review

I watched this show a couple of weeks ago and am only now getting around to reviewing it.  Sadly it has yet to be released on DVD.  I believe the VHS is now out of print, but you can still find it at Takarazuka-an or on Yahoo!Japan Auctions.  It's been shown on SkyStage I believe as well.

Mwa ha ha ha ha...

The Osaka Samurai tickets are mine!  MINE!

The Loppi machine at Lawsons was surprisingly easy to use this time.  I had a little trouble inputting my name at one point, but other than that I was able to do it by myself :D

Ah, Kiriyan, do know that you're the only person who I would sit through a nihonmono for (which I can rarely understand) twice?  Yes...I've passed that threshold in fandom.  I'm seeing a show twice.  Is there any hope for me now?

(Well, on a happier note, at least this is a Bow Hall show, so the tickets were considerably cheaper.  I can go to Osaka Samurai twice for the cost of one ticket to Rika in Thoroughly Modern Millie >_<

So I'll be going on Saturday June 9th and Thursday June 14th.  I got pretty good seats for both times, so that makes me very excited.  And I think Dal Lake is playing the weekend of the 16th and 17th, so assuming I can get tickets, it's going to be a very Zuka-filled week *happy grin*

Oh God, what kind of level of fandom have I reached?  I know that there are people who are deeper in than me, but I still feel like I've hit a new level >_<

More fun with Tsukigumi

The Mahoroba/Magician's Melacholy page is up.  There's not much there yet, but there is a summary.  I know there's always an official English one with all Grand Theater shows, but I might try to hack this one for my own amusement/curiosity.

I'm contemplating taking a trip down to the Kansai area for this, as I get some time off that I can only use in August or September.  However, I will have just been there only a few weeks before for Soragumi's performance, so I'm not sure if I want to spend the money it would take.

Will have to see how my summer finances/schedule end up.

In other news, Osaka Samurai tickets go on sale tomorrow.  Wish me luck.

Another Kiriyan and Finch bit

Okay, so there's a total of 5 blurbs in the feature about Kiriyan and Finch in The Takarazuka III: Moon Troupe.  They each accompany pictures, which I will try to scan if I ever end up with a scanner.  This is number 3, a short one.  Very slowly working on the rest, after which time I'm going to see if there's someone out there who can take a look at them for accuracy before I maybe try to post them on TakaWiki.  Once again, this is a very rough draft.  Please don't reproduce this anywhere else.

"I can eat anything, but my favorite food is edamame.  It's cool, isn't it?1  Due to Kiriyan making me eat healthy food and training me, look at this tightly muscular body!  I receive many compliments of "This dog is the spitting image of its master!"

1. Finch uses the word "shibui", which can mean either "cool" (I think) or "bitter."  I'm wondering if he's trying to make a pun.  Edamame usually isn't bitter unless you try to eat it with the skin on, although given that Finch is a canine it may be hard for him to peel them ^_

Telling everyone about Kiriyan and Finch: Part 1

Okay, so here's part one of my attempt at translation. I gotta warn you that this isn't my strong point and I apologize for any inaccuracies. I really hope my Japanese teachers aren't weaping somewhere. If anyone feels like helping me with mistakes, I'd be very grateful.

This is from The Takarazuka III: Moon Troupe, which I think was published in 2003. Either that or the beginning of 2004. Kiriyan, Rika, and Saeko all got little features to go along with their interviews, and Kiriyan's was about Finch. I decided to give this one a go because A) it's about Kiriyan, and B) Finch doesn't use keigo.

This is only the first paragraph out of about five, so I have a ways to go.

Paris no Sora Yori mo Takaku/Fancy Dance review

Paris no Sora Yori mo Takaku/Fancy Dance review

This was originally posted to [community profile] takarazuka under [personal profile] cherrytop, my real life journal.

Since then I've bought the DVD.  I'm convinced that the reason I didn't get into Fancy Dance at the time was because (as I mentioned in my original review) I was feverish/had a really bad headache.  What can I say.  I was not going to 1) miss a show that I had bought a 8000 yen ticket for, and 2) miss seeing Tsukigumi.  Unfortunately when your head hurts, though, loud (though pretty!) music just doesn't help.  My opinion since that time has improved greatly.  However, I do think that Asa's dancing was better live.  On the DVD she's still pretty good, but she really blew me away at the theater.
